![]() Before Webb, the now-retired Spitzer telescope observed this supernova in infrared throughout its entire lifespan, yielding key data about how its emissions evolved over time. The high resolution of these images is also noteworthy. In other words, our viewing angle makes it appear that there is more material in these two crescents than there actually may be. ![]() Their brightness may be an indication of limb brightening, an optical phenomenon that results from viewing the expanding material in three dimensions. These crescents are thought to be a part of the outer layers of gas shot out from the supernova explosion. ![]() While these structures have been observed to varying degrees by NASA’s Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes and Chandra X-ray Observatory, the unparalleled sensitivity and spatial resolution of Webb revealed a new feature in this supernova remnant – small crescent-like structures. These are the locations of supernova shocks hitting more exterior material. Now spots are found even exterior to the ring, with diffuse emission surrounding it. The equatorial ring, formed from material ejected tens of thousands of years before the supernova explosion, contains bright hot spots, which appeared as the supernova’s shock wave hit the ring. The dust is so dense that even near-infrared light that Webb detects can’t penetrate it, shaping the dark “hole” in the keyhole.Ī bright, equatorial ring surrounds the inner keyhole, forming a band around the waist that connects two faint arms of hourglass-shaped outer rings. This center is packed with clumpy gas and dust ejected by the supernova explosion. This image reveals a central structure like a keyhole. On May 19, 2023, we updated this article to reflect the news that the Center for Environmental Health (CEH) sent legal notices to eight activewear brands whose clothing was tested and could expose wearers to up to 40 times the safe limit of BPA (3 micrograms), based on standards set in California. Here are the winners in each category.īisphenol A (BPA) is a chemical found in many types of plastic, and research has shown that exposure to BPA can lead to harmful health effects like asthma, cardiovascular disease, and hormonal imbalance. We tested 23 pairs of top-rated flare leggings for a month on a variety of body sizes and types, and evaluated them on quality, opacity, fit, performance, and value. If you're feeling overwhelmed by all the flared legging options on the market or are trying to decide whether or not they'll be too long or short for your frame, you've come to the right place. In Andalusia, the olive farmers’ plight follows a two-year drought combined with record-breaking heat waves. “And climate projections say that the intensity and length of these phenomena will increase.” At the same time, rainfall is projected to decrease in the region-and what does fall will come in heavy storms that trigger flash floods, which are less effective at restoring water levels across a growing season. “This translates into an increase in the intensity and frequency of extreme events, like drought, floods, windstorms and heat waves,” Magno says. And according to a European Union study, temperatures in northern Morocco, southern Spain and northern Italy reached peaks of 2.5 to four degrees C above the 1991–2020 baseline between May 2022 and April 2023. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, temperatures across the world are now 1.1 degrees Celsius higher on average, compared with preindustrial times, and in the Mediterranean they are 1.5 degrees C higher. “The Mediterranean basin is a hotspot of climate change,” says Ramona Magno, a researcher at the Italian National Research Council. In areas of North Africa, heat waves and droughts have also threatened the production of certain fruit trees. “This year, if we reach 30,000, I think we’ll pop a good bottle.” And in other parts of Italy, farmer associations have said that heat waves, floods and hailstones the size of clementines damaged local melon, watermelon, cherry and wine grape crops. “Sicily normally produces 50,000 tons of olive oil per year,” says Mario Terrasi of the Oleum Sicilia cooperative. In Sicily, olive oil producers say unseasonal rainfall and cold weather will halve their output. Elsewhere in Spain, extreme weather events devastated melon, watermelon and citrus crops. “We don’t know what’s going to happen,” he adds.Īndalusia’s drought and heat waves are among several climate stressors to hit farmers across the Mediterranean this summer. Although demand for olive oil remains strong, he says, retail prices can lag three to six months behind raw material prices. “Current prices are more than double the maximum price we saw in the last 23 years,” says Álvaro Díaz de Lope, deputy director of Dcoop, Spain’s leading olive cooperative. Until recently, price increases were held under some control by carryover oil that producers had from the previous year. Retail prices vary but, of course, are higher. According to the International Olive Oil Council, the average wholesale price of one kilogram of extra virgin olive oil in Spain, Italy and Greece-which together provide more than 60 percent of the world’s supply-was between €7.35 ($7.95) and €9.00 ($9.71). The 2022 shortage raised olive oil prices worldwide, and prices today are already at the highest levels in decades. Something like this had never happened in our industry.” ![]() “Usually after a bad harvest came a good harvest, and after a good one, a bad one. Without a lot of rain, and soon, the current drought and heat will knock the 2023 harvest down to similar levels-and global stocks will dwindle. In 2022 the country’s production was around half of its recent average. What happens in Spain affects olive oil markets worldwide. By some estimates, Andalusia accounts for the majority of the country’s output. Spain is the world’s largest olive oil producer, accounting for nearly half of global production. Unless autumn brings early and heavy rainfall, Cano says, “I will maybe have 10 percent of my normal yield.” He is secretary-general of the region’s small farmers union, and members have sent him photographs of trees with leaves that have folded and turned brown and olives that have withered. But this summer, Cristóbal Cano’s groves-25 acres in the city of Alcalá la Real near Granada, Spain-look light and nearly empty, as if the trees have already been harvested.Ĭano, like thousands of other producers in Andalusia, has battled two years of drought and high temperatures. As summer winds down in the verdant olive groves across southern Spain’s region of Andalusia, the tree branches typically bend down, heavy with ripening fruits. ![]() Would you rather have a toaster for a head or a cactus for a spine? Who Is Helios? Helios was a Greek God who is called the God of Light or Sun. Greek mythology stories were frequently adapted, starting with the Alexandrian poets and continuing through all of the early Roman Empire’s writers. It’s thought that by the end of the 5th century BC, some writers had assigned at least one lover to every major god-except Mars-as well as to a number of fabled figures. Others today attempt to highlight the homosexual aspect of ancient Greek mythology, contending that pedophilia, a term coined around 630, and the gradual projection of god-hero relationships began in the middle of the archaic period. He developed the conception of the Theban hero, the Oedipal complex. Greek myths are credited by contemporary researchers with providing modern interpretations and symbols. ![]() They believed those who did not were lazy. Medieval Christians believed God had punished Adam and Eve’s sin by making man labour in order to eat. This resemblance lends an unfavourable view of the servant as a Judas-like character, demonising Luttrell’s servants in the art he commissioned.Īnother reason that paupers were depicted in medieval art is that they were seen as embodying the sin of idleness. In an almost identical scene, a servant serves food to Luttrell who is depicted as a Christ-like figure. In the last supper illumination, a small figure of Judas kneels below the figure of Jesus. Further evidence of Luttrell’s opinions of his servants can be gleaned from a comparison between his feast illumination and The Last Supper illumination, also in the psalter. This surely suggests the way peasants and workers’ experiences are not represented in medieval art, but rather, their positions as owned objects are placed on the same level as food at a feast. Camille suggests this reflects Luttrell’s desire for a particular dinner rather than him wanting to show his servants or specific people around him. In the feast scene, the rituals of the meal are emphasised rather than any personalities of the servants surrounding Luttrell. ![]() When writing about the servants depicted in the illuminations, Camille states the artist has not represented individuals but rather stations, places to be filled. This same method of using art to humiliate the poor, as well as displaying ownership, is also seen in Geoffrey Luttrell’s psalter. Furthermore, Fehling argues there are sexual connotations to this display of nudity, as the exposed backside would be seen as submissive to superiors, further minimising and humiliating the workers. Alexander argues his “role is analogous to theirs,” in both his task and his unselfconscious behaviour. He also stands in between an ox and a donkey. In the ‘September’ miniature in the Très Riches Heures, a worker’s loose trousers expose his buttocks. Here, they are shown as bent over at work and some show their backsides to the viewer, positions in which the more powerful in society would never be depicted. The workers are also diminished by their postures. Therefore, his castles are shown as a way to impose his power on their lives. This was because of the contempt and fear felt by the Duc de Berry towards the workers on his lands. In the Très Riches Heures, although everyday peasant life is painted in the foreground, in the background are different castles and estates, dominating the scene. Herman, Jean and Paul de Limbourg, ‘September’ from Les Tr è s Riches Heures du Duc de Berry ( 1413-16), Ink on vellum, 294 x 210mm 8, Chantilly, Mus ée Condé The Lutteral Psalter is an illuminated psalter created in England by anonymous artists between 1320-40. Created by the Limbourg brothers, it has full pages representing what happened in Berry’s estates each month. The Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry was the Duke of Berry’s prayer book and created between 1412-16. However, there has been a difference in opinion over whether these portrayals are accurate and beautiful or cruel and calculated. In addition to forty-nine images from the Las Huelgas Apocalypse, six images from other manuscripts in the Morgan's collections, including the earliest Beatus painted by Maius and one by the Master of the Berry Apocalypse, are in this presentation. The Très Riches Heures and the Lutteral Psalter are the focus of historical research into the representation of peasants in Medieval art because they are unusually thorough depictions of peasant life. The Las Huelgas Apocalypse contains three sections: the prefatory cycle, the Apocalypse, and the Book of Daniel. The series of manuscripts constitutes Spain's most important contribution to medieval manuscript illumination. The exhibition celebrates the completion of a facsimile of the Morgan's Las Huelgas Apocalypse-the latest dated (1220) and largest surviving manuscript of a Spanish tradition of illuminated commentaries on the Apocalypse by the monk Beatus of Liébana. Selected images from Apocalypse Then: Medieval Illuminations from the Morgan, an exhibition held at the Morgan are presented here. It provided challenges to medieval illustrators and was the source for a number of popular images, such as Christ in Majesty, the Adoration of the Lamb, and the Madonna of the Apocalypse and contributed to the widespread use of the Evangelists' symbols. The Apocalypse, or Book of Revelation, is not only the last Book of the New Testament, but its most difficult, puzzling, and terrifying. |
